When normal sounds become annoying

Misophonia is an extremely strong dislike of normal sounds. The degree of reaction is not based on the properties of the sound, such as loudness and pitch, but by past experiences with certain sounds and overall state of mind. Misophonia is often confused with Phonophobia. For instance, some people fear that a relatively quiet sound can actually damage their hearing and therefore must be avoided. When a strong fear is evoked by sound, a person may be considered phonophobic.

Misophonia commonly occurs along with hyperacusis and/or tinnitus, but can appear alone. Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) recognizes the involvement of various nervous systems in occurrences of tinnitus, hyperacusis and misophonia. For treatment of misophonia, TRT uses a method based on the active removal of conditioned reflexive responses to sound, allowing you to feel like yourself again.
