AC Tinnitus, Hyperacusis & Balance Center, Inc., was founded by James L. Shafer, Au.D. FAAA. Staffed with Pennsylvania state licensed and nationally certified audiologists and Doctors of Audiology, our state-of-the-art office is located in York. Our Doctors of Audiology and audiologists have extensive experience in the field. All of our audiologists are highly trained in the assessment, identification, prevention and non-medical treatment of tinnitus and balance disorders.
We work closely with your primary care physicians, pediatricians, and local otolaryngologists to insure complete medical and diagnostic services. Using the most technologically advanced equipment, our audiologists are able to provide a complete range of audiology services to patients of all ages.

What is an Audiologist?
An audiologist earns a master's or a doctoral degree in audiology. Audiologists are trained hearing health professionals who:
• Evaluate hearing using behavioral and objective (non-behavioral) test procedures
• Identify hearing loss
• Refer patients to otolaryngologists (ENTs) for medical or surgical management of hearing loss and ear disease
• Determine need for hearing rehabilitation
• Determine candidacy for hearing aids
• Select and fit hearing aids
• Evaluate the balance system
All of our Audiologists are highly trained in the assessment, identification, prevention and non-medical treatment of hearing loss, the need for hearing aids, balance disorders and tinnitus. All professional staff hold Master or Doctoral degrees from accredited colleges and universities.
AC Tinnitus, Hyperacusis and Balance Center, Inc. is accredited by and participates with a variety of insurance providers.

Cynthia L. Silverman, M.A., FAAA received her Bachelor of Science degree from Penn State University and her Master of Arts degree from Temple University. She worked with Audiologic Consultants Inc. since 1990 and has served as the Director of the Tinnitus rehabilitation program since 2005 for AC Tinnitus, Hyperacusis and Balance Center in York and currently holds that position for AC Tinnitus as well. She formerly served as the director of Speech and Hearing Department of St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia.

Catherine Swenson, Au.D., CCC-A, FAAA received her Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Toledo, her Master of Science degree from the University of North Carolina and her Doctor of Audiology degree from Salus University (formerly PCO), George Osborne School of Audiology. Dr. Swenson has worked in a variety of medical settings as a diagnostic audiologist for routine evaluations and vestibular function testing. Dr. Swenson serves as a clinical audiologist for AC Tinnitus.

Kimberly E. Stremmel, Au.D., CCC-A, FAAA received her Bachelor of Science degree from West Virginia University and her Doctor of Audiology degree from Towson University. Prior to joining AC Associates, Dr. Stremmel was a clinical Audiologist with Audiologic Consultants, Inc. She brings a wealth of knowledge to the evaluation for all ages and related auditory habituation utilizing the most advanced capabilities available for determination of candidacy for hearing aids. Dr. Stremmel has extensive knowledge of pediatric to adult hearing aid fittings. Dr. Stremmel serves as the clinical director of rehabilitation.

Cara I. Adornetto, Au.D., FAAA, CCC-A received her Doctoral degree from Gallaudet University. She completed her Doctoral fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale Arizona. She served as the Cochlear Implant Program Coordinator and staff Audiologist at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Dr. Adornetto served as a Board member and Convention Chair for the Maryland Academy of Audiology. She is licensed in Maryland and is certified by the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association and a fellow of the American Academy of Audiology. Dr. Adornetto is a long time resident of Maryland and lives locally with her family.

Rachel Sharnetzka, M.S., CCC-A, FAAA, received her Bachelor of Science degree from Penn State University, Master of Science degree from Vanderbilt University, currently ranked as the number one Audiology program in the United States and is currently pursuing her Doctor of Audiology degree. Prior to joining AC Associates, Mrs. Sharnetzka was a clinical audiologist with Audiologic Consultants Inc. and served as the Clinical director of the Vestibular Laboratory at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore. She is an Adjunct Professor at Towson University teaching Vestibular Assessment and Rehabilitation and provides audiologic services to the Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic. Rachel serves as the clinical director of neuro-diagnostic services for AC Associates.

Dr. Margaret M. Jastreboff received received her Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from the Polish Academy of Sciences, and postdoctoral training in pharmacology and molecular biology at Yale University School of Medicine. She has been involved in tinnitus research since 1984, and on a full-time basis since 1991 while working at University of Maryland School of Medicine. Her experimental work aims at the study of the mechanisms of tinnitus using molecular biology, pharmacology, and behavioral techniques, including testing drugs for their effectiveness for tinnitus attenuation. She has been involved in clinical work for number of years as well, while working first as an Associate Professor at Emory University and lately as a Visiting Research Professor at Towson University. She organizes the courses on Tinnitus Retraining Therapy in the USA and abroad and as an Adjunct Professor together with Dr. Pawel J. Jastreboff teaches tinnitus and hyperacusis class at Salus University. She is a co-author of over 60 papers and 100 scientific abstracts. In 1993 she shared with Dr. Pawel J. Jastreboff the prestigious Robert W. Hocks award for her contribution to the field of tinnitus.
